During the remand hearing, Ripon broke down in tears and claimed his innocence. He alleged that he was beaten severely in front of his family members by a ‘mob’ during his arrest.

The remand hearing was held in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam on Thursday (August 22).

During the hearing, Ripon’s lawyer Obaidul Islam and several others applied for bail, seeking cancellation of the remand. After that, Kamrul Hasan Ripon spoke with the court’s permission.

Talking about his illness, he said, “I am feeling very ill physically. I have a heart problem. I was admitted to the hospital when the government fell. I was staying at home due to illness.”

Demanding transparency in his political life, the former president of Jagannath University Chhatra League said, “I have been in politics for a long time. I was the president of Jagannath University Chhatra League. But no one has been able to raise any charges against me. I am not involved in any crime.”

Describing the night of his arrest in a tearful voice, Ripon said, “I was arrested by a ‘mob’ in the Bashundhara residential area. Then I was beaten up in front of my family members.” At that time, he expected justice from the court.

Earlier, on Monday (August 19) at around 2:30 am, local people arrested Ripon from the Bashundhara residential area of the capital. At that time, he was beaten up and handed over to the police. He was initially treated at Kurmitola General Hospital due to injuries sustained in the beating.

The next day, Tuesday, Jatrabari Police Station’s SI Russell Sardar, the investigation officer of the case, presented him in court and applied for a seven-day remand. However, the court ordered him to be sent to jail that day and set a remand hearing for Thursday.
